Former U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee will announce that he is making an Independent run for Governor of Rhode Island later today. The Providence Journal reports that the former Republican Senator who lost his bid for re-election to Sheldon Whitehouse in 2006 will dip into his personal fortune to make a bid for Governor. Chafee will be a formidable candidate in Rhode Island.

Chafee was my favorite Republican Senator when he was in the Senate. He opposed the Bush tax cuts, the Iraq War and supported funding for health care and education. I supported Whitehouse in 2006 to give Harry Reid the Majority but Chafee wasn't a bad Senator. If he wins the governor's seat in Rhode Island, it wouldn't be so bad for that state.
