Waterboarding Is Torture! Attorney General Eric Holder

The Two Minutes Hate: July 29, 2009

How does this clown stay on the air? Because unfortunately there is a vast audience of insipid racist morons in The United States who can't stand the fact that we have an African American President.

Lou Dobbs Is Alone In The Fringe: Media Renders Final Verdict On Birther Claims

Repeat of 1993

In President Clinton's first election as President---1993---Republicans won the Governor's race in Virginia, New Jersey and the Mayor's race in New York City. George Allen, Christie Todd Whitman and Rudy Giuliani all swept into office in the 1993 GOP tidal wave.

2009 could be a repeat. 2009 will make President Obama's first election as President and in New Jersey Republican Chris Christie looks poised to defeat NJ Gov Jon Corzine. In Virginia Republican Bob McDonnell is well ahead and poised to end Democratic control of the Governor's Mansion which began in 2001 with the election of Mark Warner. In New York Republican leaning Mayor Michael Bloomberg is poised to win a third term.

2010 is the midterm and real test but 2009 is not looking good for Democrats.

New Jersey Governor's race projection: Leans Republican

According to new polls it is strongly likely that the New Jersey Governor's office will change hands in November. A new Public Policy Polling Survey has US Attorney Chris Chrisite leading New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine 50% to 36%. Christine is projected to win with 50%+ in November, around 53%-55%. Among Independents which are critical in any election Christie leads 54-26 and Hispanics are going with Christie 50-33.

Bergen, Middlesex and Essex are the areas to watch. If Christie can make inroads in those areas, Corzine is finished.

Liu could pull off upset in the Comptroller primary

New York City Councilman John Liu could pull off an upset win in the New York City Comptroller Democratic primary. A few months ago many would have said John who however roughly one month before the City's Dem primary, the Councilman leads the pack.

Liu leads with 17% compared to 10% for City Councilwoman Melinda Katz, 8% for City Councilman David Yassky and 5% for City Councilman David Weprin.
...........................................................................
This race is interesting because Katz has raised the most money and has been in the race the longest. Also Katz is a former state Assemblywoman and ran for Congress in 1998 unsuccessfully. Weprin comes from a political family and Yassky is well regarded and has also run for Congress. How Liu is pulling this off, I don't know but hes in good shape.

Green leads in NYC Public Advocate Democratic primary

With no Republican running, the winner of the New York City Public Advocate Democratic primary will be New York City's next Public Advocate. If a Quinnipiac poll is any indication, Mark Green will walk away with the race.

According to the poll Green leads with 37%, Civil Rights Attorney Norm Siegel trails with 13%, Brooklyn Councilman and former Clinton advisor Bill de Blasio trails with 10% and City Councilman Eric Gioia finishes with 7%.

Thompson leads NYC Dem Mayoral race contenders

The Democratic primary for Mayor is more then a month away and City Comptroller Bill Thompson leads all of his Democratic primary opponents. Thompson's most formidable opponent in the primary is New York City Councilman Tony Avella. Thompson leads Avella 44%-11% and is expected to win the primary with 60%.

Baucus could be stripped of chairmanship

Liberal Democrat's in the Senate have suggested a secret ballot every two years on whether or not to strip committee chairmen of their chairmanships in a sharp warning to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus.

Baucus "has frustrated many of his liberal colleagues by negotiating for weeks with Republicans over health care reform without producing a bill or even much detail about the policies he is considering."

Senator Tom Harkin said: "Every two years the caucus could have a secret ballot on whether a chairman should continue, yes or no. If the 'no's win, he's out."

Marshall considers Senate bid NC

North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall is considering a run for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina as a Democrat. According to CQ politics, Marshall is "pretty seriously leaning towards" a run against Senator Richard Burr.

Marshall is being heavily courted to take on Burr who is seen as vulnerable heading into the 2010 election. Democratic leader's in the state are drooling at the prospect of Marshall running against Burr. She was the first woman to win statewide office in North Carolina and has been re-elected three times.
....................................................................
Burr is vulnerable. NC went for Obama in 2008 and sent Kay Hagan to the Senate and Bev Purdue to the Governor's Mansion. Go Marshall!

Emails implicate Rove in prosecutor firings

From Taegan Goddard's Political Wire:

"Political advisor Karl Rove and other high ranking figures in the Bush White House played a greater role than previously understood in the firing of federal prosecutors almost three years ago, according to emails obtained by the Washington Post, in a scandal that led to mass Justice Department resignations and an ongoing criminal probe".

....................................................................
Looks like the Bush White House alumni are going down.

Boston Cop Accused Of Rant

From The Boston Herald;

Officer Justin Barrett, 36, who is assigned to heavily minority District B-3 in Mattapan, was placed on paid administrative leave pending a termination hearing. When a police supervisor confronted Barrett about the e-mail - in which Gates is called a “banana-eating jungle monkey” - he admitted to being the author, officials said.

Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis moved to fire Barrett after the two-year veteran, who is also a National Guardsman, allegedly dispatched the hateful e-mail to The Boston Globe and forwarded it to colleagues at the Guard.

“If I was the officer (Gates) verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC (pepper spray) deserving of his belligerent noncompliance,” the e-mail reads. Read More.

Another GOP Family Values Representative

The Stupidity of the Gates Arrest

From Time By Lawrence O'Donnell, Jr.

Here is what the absurdist, typically stilted police language of Sergeant James Crowley's official report on his arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates really means:

Gates: You're not the boss of me!
Crowley: I am the boss of you.
Gates: You are not the boss of me!
Crowley: I'll show you. You're under arrest.

There is no crime described in Crowley's official version of the way Gates behaved. Crowley says explicitly that he arrested Gates for yelling. Nothing else, not a single threatening movement, just yelling. On the steps of his own home. Yelling is not a crime. Yelling does not meet the definition of disorderly conduct in Massachusetts. Not a single shouted word or action that Crowley has attributed to Gates amounts to disorderly conduct. That is why the charges had to be dropped. Read More.

Eleven Score and Thirteen

There were no arrests that day.
The million strong of old and young,
Beige and brown, all or none;
The papers report no arrests that day.

The roads filled from Maryland and miles around,
Never at a stand still,
Surging, and swelling the Mall with new neighbors;
The cold defied or ignored
or merely withstood.
It's worth it this day, they said.
I am here this day, they said.

The modern screens and marble monuments
Vied for attention,
The one replaying reminders
of the road traversed by this man
to get to his place;
The others hailing the history
of journey taken by many
to bring us this possibility in this place.

Not a circus.
Not a spree,
Not yet a somber duty
Or a humdrum rerun of a civic event.
A constant thrum, chatter, songs
And cheers, a patient and persistent throng:
We come, we wait, we'll see.

The stands fill;
The verve of the crowds spills forward and out,
Their tangible excitement
Matching the brio of the military bands.
The justice stands;
Aretha soars;
The violin's last notes float down the reflecting pool.
The cheers and hoots crescendo
Then quell
Into collective bated breath as Lincoln's bible is upheld:
The silence echoing with
furled purpose,
with the drum of determination,
the fife of hope;
The silence as strong
As the rolling roar
When the oath is at last taken

Who would think
That anyone would live to see this day?

Who would think
That the maid who swept and cleaned, Jefferson's slaves,
Would once look down and see
A sister hosting tea and not serving it?
The men in sheets may still convene.
I never wondered 'till today:
who ironed the white they wore?

For once I don't wish to apologize
for the passport I hold.
Again I feel pride for the
accident of my birthplace.
At last it seems America is not a myth.

In way they never guessed or meant
Our forefathers were right about
Who
Are created equal.

Palin implicated in ethics probe

From The A.P.

An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by trading on her position in seeking money for legal fees, in the latest legal distraction for the former vice presidential candidate as she prepares to leave office this week.

The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters. More.

Corzine raises money

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine who spent $60 million of his own money on a Senate race in 2000 then poured $43 million into the 2005 Governor's race is now trying to raise money.

The New York Times reports, "After a costly divorce and a steep decline in his net worth, Mr. Corzine, the onetime chief executive of Goldman Sachs, is in the unfamiliar position of seeking donations to foot the bill for his campaign".

This time Corzine "is trying to raise upwards of $15 million from donors, according to people involved, which he hopes to match with no more then $25 million of his own."
...........................................................................
Okay, I am a loyal Democrat and I have always supported Corzine but I am also pragmatic and I have been following this race. If I were Corzine I would throw that $25 million into the stock market while stocks are cheap and wait it out. Christie unless something dramatic happens will be the next Governor of New Jersey. The handwriting is on the wall. Corzine blew it with the Lt. Gov pick. He should of went with Corey Booker the Newark Mayor and he should of started raising money sooner. The Toll Hike plan and the sales tax increase are among Corzine's problems.

Senator Kennedy on health care reform

In an interview with Newsweek Senator Kennedy writes that health care reform is "the cause of my life".

"For four decades I have carried this cause---from the floor of the United States Senate to every part of this country. It has never been merely a question of policy; it goes to the heart of my belief in a just society. Now the issue has more meaning for me and more urgency than ever before. But it's always been deeply personal, because the importance of health care has been a recurrent lesson through most of my 77 years."
...........................................................................
Reagan use to say "Win one for the Gipper". I say lets pass health care reform for Ted. We are so close.....let's get this done. It's time to act!

Ensign approval takes huge hit

Nevada Senator John Ensigns approval rating has taken a big hit according to a Las Vegas Review Journal Poll. The Senator's approval rating stands at 31% down 8 points in the last month and 22 points since he admitted to an affair with a staffer.

54% of resident's do not believe that the Senator should resign from office.
..............................................................................
Ensign has declared that he will seek re-election to the Senate in 2012. Before that he was exploring a Presidential run and because he is from the west coast would have been an ideal running mate for Romney or Huckabee. Was she worth it Senator?

Cuomo leads in $$$ and polls

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo who has been coy regarding a possible bid for the Democratic nomination for Governor in 2010 posted strong fund raising numbers and leads Democratic incumbent David Paterson in polls.

Cuomo raised over $5 million this quarter doubling the fund raising efforts of Paterson and bringing his total to $10 million. Cuomo also leads Paterson 61-27. Polls also indicate that Cuomo would be stronger as the Democratic nominee for Governor of New York while Paterson most likely will be defeated.
...........................................................................
Cuomo won't run for Governor because he knows that it will racially divide New York Democrat's and give the GOP more of an advantage in the general. The fact of the matter however is that Cuomo is clearly a stronger candidate then Paterson and would without doubt keep the governor's office in Democratic hands and would be a far better governor then any of the Republicans. Schumer should be encouraging Paterson to step aside for the good of the party and clear the field for Cuomo who is a far stronger candidate.

Walter Cronkite dies

Legendary American broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite best known as anchorman for the CBS Evening News died today at the age of 92. Cronkite died after an extended illness with cerebrovascular disease.

Cronkite joined CBS News in 1950 and anchored the 1952 Democratic and Republican National Conventions as well as the networks coverage of the 1952 Presidential race. Cronkite broke the news of the John F. Kennedy assination. Cronkite played a critical role in the Vietnam War stating in an editorial report that the war was unwinnable to which President Johnson responded by saying, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America".

Cronkite was a legend in the world of journalism.

Grassroots that put Obama in the White House now try to pass health care reform

Democratic activists and grassroots supporter's in Florida mobilized and worked tirelessly this time last year to put Barack Obama in the White House and deliver Florida. Though the President isn't up for re-election until 2012, his key supporters are organizing again this year, this time for the President's landmark health care reform legislation.

The volunteer's referred to as Organizing for America are targeting Florida as a battleground state in the push for health care reform. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida who sits on the Senate Finance Committee is a key factor in the health care debate. Nelson's support of the bill will be critical. Nelson has expressed reservations regarding the bill.

Meanwhile MoveOn.org has been demonstrating outside of Nelson's state offices urging him to support the Obama health care plan and the DNC has begun to run ad's in Florida called "It's Time" urging Congress to approve health care reform.

Crist mum on Sotomayor nomination

The U.S. Senate will confirm or reject Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor thats why it is puzzling as to why the leading Senate candidate in Florida, Gov. Charlie Crist will not take a position on Sonia Sotomayor.

Asked about Sotomayor Thursday in Tallahassee, Crist said, "I haven't decided, and I've got a lot of responsibilities in the job that I hold. Yesterday, I was actually appointing Judges."

Meanwhile Republican Senator Mel Martinez who Crist is running to replace in the Senate will vote to confirm Sotomayor.
...................................................................
A Senate candidate should be up to date on the issues coming before the Senate. The nomination of a Supreme Court Justice is a big issue coming before the Senate and Crist who is the state's former Attorney General should take a position. Kendrick Meek has come out in favor of Sotomayor's appointment. Crist's rival in the GOP primary Marco Rubio opposes the appointment. Crist, well we don't know where he stands.

Senate Majority Leader backs Gillibrand

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is throwing his political weight behind freshman New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand in next year's Democratic Senate primary. Reid called Gillibrand "a rising star in the Democratic caucus" and announced that he would back the Senator appointed to Hillary Clinton's seat.

Gillibrand faces a tough primary challenge from Manhattan Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. Some polls show Maloney narrowly ahead.
..................................................................
It is protocol for Reid to back Gillibrand. Gillibrand is the incumbent Senator and Reid can't afford to piss her off #1 and #2 it is Senate courtesy. I will never forgive or understand why Gillibrand voted for the Bush tax cuts when she was in the House.

Republican Governor who turned down stimulus money needs loan

Texas Governor Rick Perry who was among a handful of Republican Governor's rejecting federal money from President Obama's economic recovery plan is now asking the federal government for a loan to cover the expenses the federal recovery money would have paid for.
...............................................................
What an Asshole!

Health Care deal is in the works

The American Medical Association that led effort's to kill the Clinton Health Care Plan fifteen years ago has come out in favor of the House Democratic Health Care plan. President Obama praised the physicians group saying, "these doctor's are joining the chorus of Americans who know that the time to reform what is broken about the health care system is now."

Meanwhile House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has indicated that the Democratic reform health care bill would be on the House floor "not next week but the week after", reported by NBC news. The Speaker said: "It's really important for everyone to know that when this bill passes shortly there after, pre existing medical conditions will no longer bar people from having health care".

On the Senate side, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters "that he hopes to put health care reform legislation on the Senate floor the week after next and to pass it before the 4-week August recess", reports The Hill.
.......................................................................
This is heartwarming and very reassuring. This is the closest we have come in four decades to reforming our health care system. It's not a done deal. Some Democrat's are wavering and it's important for everyone to keep the pressure on Senate and House Democrat's to pass this bill. We need EVERY Democratic vote on this bill. Expect major opposition from the other side so Dems must stand together. Olympia Snow of Maine is the only Republican who might go with us on this.

Koch endorses Snyder for Manhattan DA; McCall goes with Vance

Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch is throwing his support behind Judge Leslie Crocker Snyder in the race for Manhattan DA. Koch called any of the three candidates for DA qualified but he has a history with Snyder. In 1983 then Mayor Koch appointed Snyder to the Criminal Court.

Former New York Comptroller and Ambassador Carl McCall is throwing his support behind Cyrus Vance. The Vance campaign in response to Koch's endorsement of Snyder said, "Cy Vance, like most Democratic primary voters, respects the former Mayor immensely. But this is after all someone who endorsed George W. Bush".

Vance has received the endorsements of McCall and former New York City Mayor David Dinkins as well as DA Robert Morgenthau and NYC Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.
...................................................................
I am with Vance and I think he would be a great DA. I also like Richard Aborn but Morgenthau is going with Vance so why wouldn't anyone else?

Richard Ravitch appointed NY Lt. Governor

A 76 year old New York City attorney, business and civic leader is the new Lt. Governor of New York. July 8th in a legally disputed move, NY Governor David Paterson appointed Richard Ravitch Lt. Governor of New York. Ravitch has agreed to accept no salary for his position as Lt. Governor.

Ravitch was a 1989 Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York City losing the primary to then Manhattan Borough President David Dinkins. He was appointed head of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority by then New York Governor Hugh Carey in 1979. He was Chairman of the MTA during the 11 day 1980 NYC transit strike and led the agency until 1983.

New York Democrats take back the NY Senate

New York Democrat's have regained control of the state Senate after Senator Pedro Espada of the Bronx rejoined the Democrats, breaking a 31-31 split between the two parties in the Senate.

Democratic Senator Malcolm Smith, at a broadcast Albany news conference, said he was now the Senate President.

New Hampshire Governor vetos Medical Marijuna Bill

Democratic New Hampshire Governor John Lynch got some really bad advice recently. The Governor recently vetoed legislation that would have made New Hampshire the 14th state to legalize marijuna use by severely ill people. The Governor cited concerns over distribution and cultivation. Lawmakers made changes to the bill in hopes of winning over Gov. Lynch who had been critical of the bill from the beginning.

The Governor cited too many defects in the bill. The bill's sponsor, Representative Evalyn S. Merrick said she will push for an override.
..................................................................
Last month Lynch signed a bill to legalize same sex marriages in NH. It's a shame he did not take a bold progressive approach on the medical marijuna bill.

Florida Democrats out raise Florida Republicans

For the first time since 1996 the Florida Democratic Party has raised more money then the Florida Republican Party. The state Dem Party raised $1.19 million to the FL GOP's $1.16 million. Democrat's counted 1,740 donations while the state Republicans counted 220 contributions.

Meanwhile Democratic governor contender Alex Sink far out raised Republican governor contender Bill McCollum.
..........................................................................
Two years ago Florida went with Obama and elected two Democrat's to Congress. I see Florida going blue in '10.

Obama leads potential rival Pawlenty in Minnesota

The President leads potential Republican Presidential rival Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty in his home state of Minnesota. According to a Public Policy Survey Poll the President is ahead 51% to 40% in a potential 2012 match up.

Democrat's lead in party support

According to Gallup: "The Democratic Party continues to hold a solid advantage in party support over the Republican Party, as 49% of Americans interviewed in the second quarter of this year identified with or leaned to the Democratic Party, compared with 40% who did so for the Republican Party. However, that nine point Democratic advantage is smaller than the 13-point edge Gallup measured in the first quarter of the year."
...........................................................
Voters are with the Democratic party but the party must pass a universal health care plan in order to maintain their edge. If the party fails in it's his promise to pass health care reform, they can be doomed for 2010.

Attorney General Eric Holder may probe Bush-era torture

From Newsweek;

Alone among cabinet officers, attorneys general are partisan appointees expected to rise above partisanship. All struggle to find a happy medium between loyalty and independence. Few succeed. At one extreme looms Alberto Gonzales, who allowed the Justice Department to be run like Tammany Hall. At the other is Janet Reno, whose righteousness and folksy eccentricities marginalized her within the Clinton administration. Lean too far one way and you corrupt the office, too far the other way and you render yourself impotent. Mindful of history, Holder is trying to get the balance right. "You have the responsibility of enforcing the nation's laws, and you have to be seen as neutral, detached, and nonpartisan in that effort," Holder says. "But the reality of being A.G. is that I'm also part of the president's team. I want the president to succeed; I campaigned for him. I share his world view and values."

These are not just the philosophical musings of a new attorney general. Holder, 58, may be on the verge of asserting his independence in a profound way. Four knowledgeable sources tell NEWSWEEK that he is now leaning toward appointing a prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration's brutal interrogation practices, something the president has been reluctant to do. While no final decision has been made, an announcement could come in a matter of weeks, say these sources, who decline to be identified discussing a sensitive law-enforcement matter. Such a decision would roil the country, would likely plunge Washington into a new round of partisan warfare, and could even imperil Obama's domestic priorities, including health care and energy reform. Holder knows all this, and he has been wrestling with the question for months. "I hope that whatever decision I make would not have a negative impact on the president's agenda," he says. "But that can't be a part of my decision." Read More.

Cheney told CIA not to discuss program

From The A.P.;

Former Vice President Dick Cheney directed the CIA eight years ago not to inform Congress about a nascent counterterrorism program that CIA Director Leon Panetta terminated in June, officials with direct knowledge of the matter said Saturday

Subsequent CIA directors did not inform Congress because the intelligence-gathering effort had not developed to the point that they believed merited a congressional briefing, said a former intelligence official and another government official familiar with Panetta's June 24 briefing to the House and Senate Intelligence committees.

Panetta did not agree.

Upon learning of the program June 23 from within the CIA, Panetta terminated it and the next day called an emergency meeting with the House and Senate Intelligence committees to inform them of the program and that it was canceled. More

GOP support for Ensign dwindles as new details of affair emerge

From The Las Vegas Sun;

Sen. John Ensign appeared to be losing support among his Republican base Thursday as the lawmaker disclosed that his parents, who made millions in the casino industry, paid the family of his affair partner $96,000 around the time she and her husband stopped working for him.

Ensign’s parents made the gifts to Doug Hampton and his wife, Cynthia, “out of concern of the well-being of the longtime family friends during a difficult time,” said a statement issued by Ensign’s attorney. The gifts “are consistent with a pattern of generosity by the Ensign family to the Hamptons and others,” the statement said. More

Steele against Palin Presidential run

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele doesn't think it's possible for Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to run for President in 2012 according to a Fox News interview.

Steele said: "Not having talked to the governor, I take 2012 off the table right now simply because given everything she's going through personally, dealing with the financial mess that all these ludicrous investigations have put her and Todd in, at the moment, I think she's trying to focus on getting her house in order, her personal house in order".

40% of Americans think Palin hurt her chances of winning the Republican Presidential nomination with her resignation as Governor while 61% of Republicans think she will run for President.
.......................................................................
National Republicans know that Palin winning the nomination would be a disaster for the party and I am sure are praying that she won't run. If she does run, I think she has a very good shot at the nomination.

Kendrick Meek reports strong fundraising

The Kendrick Meek for U.S. Senate campaign in Florida reports another strong fund raising quarter. The Miami Congressman reported raising $1.2 million this quarter bringing his total to more then $3 million.

Meek is the most formidable Democratic candidate in the race for the U.S. Senate.

Corzine faces uphill election in NJ

According to a new poll Governor Jon Corzine is in for the political fight of his life in New Jersey. Corzine trails Republican candidate Chris Christie 59% to 32% according to a Strategic Poll.

New York Governor update: Lazio is IN, Giuliani ponders run

Former Long Island Congressman Rick Lazio is running for the Republican nomination for New York Governor as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani ponders entering the race.

"I'm thinking about it but I don't know if I'm at the point of seriously considering it. It's a little too early," the former Mayor told CNN.

Giuliani would easily defeat New York Governor David Paterson according to polls but would lose to New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo has shut down speculation that he will run however like Giuliani said, "It's a little too early."

Franken to take seat on Monday; cites Clinton and Bradley styles

Finally I can say it, UNITED STATES SENATOR AL FRANKEN, will be sworn into the Senate on Monday. After months of legal rancour, Norm Coleman has dropped his lawsuits and challenges and is being mentioned as a candidate for Governor of Minnesota in 2010, a topic for another day.

Al Franken heads to the Senate saying he would like to pare ll the style of former Senator's Hillary Clinton and Bill Bradley.

"Both came to the Senate with some celebrity and some skepticism from people on the Hill," Senator Franken said. "They both put their heads down and did the work and won over their colleagues by not running to the camera."

Franken is right. I was not a Hillary fan in the presidential primary but Hillary was a great and serious Senator for New York. She took on the issues and worked across the aisle to get things done for New York and America. Bill Bradley was a passionate progressive who I think would have a made a great President. Both were great Senator's and assets to the party and their respective states the same way Franken will be.

Palin to step down as Governor; Presidential run likely

With a little over a year left in her term as Governor of Alaska, not only is Sarah Palin declining to run for a third term as Governor, she is abandoning Alaska all together.

The Governor and 2008 Republican Vice-Presidential nominee announced today that she will step down as Governor of Alaska at the end of the month transferring powers to Lt. Governor Sean Parnell. Palin cited spending more time with her family and the fact that she did not want to be a lame duck governor traveling the state on the taxpayers dime.

The price of oil is going up and that's not good for a politician in Alaska. A lot of Republican and Democrat's are looking at the race and Palin would have been vulnerable in her bid for a third term. Palin didn't want to risk losing a statewide race which would crush her Presidential ambitions. So, instead of serving out the remainder of her term, Palin is bailing and running for President. The Governor says she wants to spend time with the kids, my guess is she'll be spending a lot of time in Iowa, Florida, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Stay tuned.

Sanford Will Not Disclose Records

From Taegan Goddard;

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) "has backed out of a promise to release personal financial records proving he did not use state money for trips to see his mistress," the AP reports.

A spokesman now says the governor "does not want to discuss personal matters in the media anymore."

Meanwhile, the AP released audio clips of the Sanford interview -- which show "a midlife crisis playing out in public," as one Political Wire reader said -- that may ultimately prove to be his undoing: Clip 1, Clip 2, Clip 3
