Coakley wins Democratic nomination for Kennedy seat

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley as expected won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate tonight. The seat had been occupied by Senator Ted Kennedy for 47 years.

Coakley if elected in January as expected will become the Commonwealth's first female U.S. Senator. The former Middlesex District Attorney became the first female Attorney General of Massachusetts in 2006.

Coakley is expected to defeat Republican State Senator Scott Brown in the January special election and will be a great U.S. Senator for Massachusetts.
